Masquerade General Information

Masquerade with Marty Gear in MGM style logo

The Balticon Masquerade is the opportunity for fans to present their science fiction- and fantasy-related costumes to delight our audience. While some costumers may simply model their costumes on stage, most entries present dramatic or comedic skits. A team of judges reward costume design and workmanship to encourage our costumers’ efforts.

Our Masquerade participants represent all cultures, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, and ways of life. We strive towards friendly, fair, respectful competition to showcase costumes and cosplay.

Marty Gear Memorial Masquerade

Due to the pandemic, we are once again planning to have a virtual Masquerade which will be a compilation of videos and photos provided by the entrants. Group costumes and individual entries are welcome! Entrants are asked to submit still photos or a video presentation filmed using their own creative scenario, indoors or out, to present their costumes for everyone to enjoy. Our excellent tech crew stands by to help. Video length for a single presenter is a maximum of one minute and for groups the maximum is two minutes. Requests for additional time may be approved by the Masquerade Director (masquerade@balticon.org). Remember, shorter is better, even on video.

Our Masquerade is based on the current International Costumers’ Guild guidelines. There are four skill divisions: Young Fan, Novice, Journeyman, and Master. The division system allows costumers to compete with others of similar experience levels. A brief description of the divisions is given on the Masquerade Rules page. All competition entries are eligible for Best in Show.
